It is such a huge pleasure to launch my website.
The idea has been a long gestation after falling in love with everything Laos, including their stunning textiles, when I landed there for work in 2003. The seed of an idea - including the name Softwinds of Trade - was hatched after meeting incredibly talented weavers in remote villages in the north and south of the country. At that time there was an immense push for globalisation and ‘fast’ manufactoring of goods. I watched the weavers at work and marvelled at their skill and tenacity to complete one piece of work that would take anything up to a month to make. How wonderful would it be if we stopped to appreciate this traditional method of the handmade - slow and beautiful. The polar opposite of globalisation. This was the seed of thought that got me thinking!
It is always a humbling experience to be invited to someone’s home, particularly a very poor household. I have been privileged to sit with people in their homes and hear stories of struggle and resilience.
Softwinds of Trade intends that all the products that are sold on its website are ethically sourced directly from artisans, weaving groups and established social enterprises. That way we have a close connection with the artisan that makes the beautiful products on offer and you in turn share the story.
I am delighted to share this beautiful collection of textiles and I hope that you enjoy them too!
Warmly,
Colette
