About Us
Softwinds of Trade is the dream of owner Colette McInerney conceived during her many years working in international development, most significantly in Laos. Through her work, Colette saw first hand the consequences of a lack of access to markets has on entrepreneurs trying to build sustainable businesses.
By providing consistent access to an international marketplace, Softwinds of Trade provides women entrepreneurs in Laos with a steady income they can rely on to support their businesses, families, and communities.
From our hands to yours
At Softwinds of Trade we foster the slow movement of trade from one hand to another, enabling a deep connection with the artisan who created the beautiful pieces available to you in our online store.
The motifs and stories of ancient Lao traditions are woven into the textiles that the women create. It is an artform that Softwinds of Trade is passionate about preserving and sharing with you.
Our ethos
Softwinds of Trade has developed a boutique network of Lao artisans and social enterprise partnerships established over a period of many years.
By providing an expanded market place for female weavers, Softwinds of Trade works with the artisans to increase income giving them the resources they need to pass on their traditions to future generations.
Our partners share Softwinds of Trade ethos that focuses on:
Ethical trade
Women's economic well-being
Expanded market access
Cultural integrity and preservation
All of the textiles in Softwinds of Trade's current collection are handmade and designed in Laos by Lao women.
Travelling throughout Laos in particular, Colette was privileged and delighted to meet many women artisans working in the diverse weaving styles that are a feature of Laos textiles.
The result is Softwinds of Trade.
